Kings of Joburg

Ferguson Films is one the most exciting, and leading film companies in South Africa in this current era. They have produced series such as “The Wild” , “Rockville” , “The Throne”, “Unmarried”, “The Queen”, and “Igazi, to name a few. Their unique take on the urban culture of South Africa, with a blend of traditional content and subject matter, while maintaining a good balance of range and diversity with their different productions is truly breathtaking.

Their latest offering, Kings of Joburg (season 1), which will be released on Friday, 4th December 2020, has been making head waves since it was announced earlier this year on social media. Kings of Joburg promises to be a thrilling crime thriller of jaw-dropping performances.

The Story:

In a teasing summary, Kings of Joburg is lead by Simon Masire, known as “Vader”, played by Shona Ferguson himself. Vader portrays the character of being the sharp, by any means necessary sort of businessman. But he seems to be carrying a secret of occultist proportions. Or perhaps it’s not such a secret afterall?..

His younger brother, Mogomosti Masire, known as “Mo”, played by Zolisa Xavula, is recently out of prison. With a mysterious aura about him, the one factor that sticks out is his loyalty and love for his family, most likely at the cost of his own freedom. A tale of twists and turns will ensue, as the thirst for power, money and dare we say, blood…

Shona Ferguson explains: “When I created ’Kings Of Joburg’ I wanted to root the show in elements of love, family, conflict and power. …the premise of the series is centred around the question, ’Am I my brother’s keeper?’ and this narrative is explored in all six episodes. …the mystical and thriller side of the story is inspired by the folk tales that I grew up learning about from my late father, Peter Harry Ferguson. …these stories kept me up at night and gave me nightmares but I had to bring them to life in a tale of human conflict.”

Production:

The first season of the series will feature six episodes. The set up boasts with luxury houses, fancy rides and a lifestyle of opulence and secrets. With a superb storyline and scintillating scenes, the anticipation levels are sky high. The cast is rich with A-List South African actors and actresses, with mostly familiar faces who grace us with their talent on various productions. Names like Buhle Samuels, TK Sebothoma, Cindy Mahlangu, Tsholofelo Matshaba, Nneka Tsajwa as well as Abdul & SK Khoza.

The mystical twist of dark fantasy within the storyline is a risque maneuver, and would have to be met with realism and precision, and that is definitely something to look forward to.

Shona Ferguson acknowledged the people who helped turn his vision into a reality. “I am also grateful to have worked with such an amazing cast and crew who gave it their all and helped bring my vision to life,” he says.

Several South African produced stories have made a noteworthy impact on Netflix so far… A high standard has already been set, and Kings of Joburg should be meeting that. But then again, it’s Ferguson Films! Their filmography should fit right in as the production company is famous for delivering only the finest content, and we expect nothing but fireworks!

In our humblest opinion, we bet that this will be a feature that reaches far beyond expectations, and set new boundaries. You can most certainly hold us on to that…
